Brainstorming: Igniting Innovation
Brainstorming in UX is a structured, facilitated process designed to overcome cognitive biases and generate a massive volume of potential solutions before narrowing them down.
The "Yes, And..." Philosophy
Borrowed from improvisational comedy, this is the golden rule of brainstorming. When someone proposes an idea, no matter how ridiculous, you do not say "No, that won't work because...". You say, "Yes, and we could also..." This prevents the premature death of innovative concepts. Also, it allows your team to explore ideas without constraints and without minimizing their input and ideas from the start which could make them think twice or keep to themselves the best solution for the project.
Expert Techniques
1. Brainwriting (Silent Brainstorming)
In traditional brainstorming, the loudest person in the room often dominates. Brainwriting solves this. Give everyone 5 minutes to silently write their ideas on sticky notes. Then, everyone puts them on the board simultaneously. This democratizes the process and ensures introverts' ideas are heard.
2. Worst Possible Idea
If the team is stuck, ask them to come up with the absolute worst way to solve the problem. This lowers the barrier to entry, gets people laughing, and surprisingly often, the "worst" idea can be flipped on its head to reveal a brilliant solution.
Tools for Remote Brainstorming
If your team is distributed, digital whiteboards are essential. FigJam and Miro offer timer features, voting dots, and sticky notes that make remote ideation as effective as being in the same room. Any online colaboration tool could help if the team members are working remotely.
