Crazy Eights: Rapid Ideation
Crazy Eights is a core exercise from the Google Design Sprint methodology. The premise is simple: Sketch 8 distinct ideas in 8 minutes. It forces designers to stop agonizing over details and focus purely on divergent thinking.
Why It Works
Your first idea is usually the most obvious one. Your second and third ideas are slight variations. By forcing you to generate eight ideas under extreme time pressure, Crazy Eights bypasses your conscious filter and taps into raw, unconventional creativity.
How to Facilitate a Session
- Preparation: Give everyone eight post it notes and a thick Sharpie (this prevents them from drawing tiny, unnecessary details).
- The Sprint: Set a timer for exactly 8 minutes. Announce each minute as it passes.
- No Judgment: Remind the team that stick figures and ugly boxes are completely acceptable. This is about concepts, not art.
- The Critique: After 8 minutes, have everyone tape their sheets to the wall. Give everyone 3 dot stickers to vote on the most compelling ideas.
The "Steal and Enhance" Phase
After voting, take the winning sketches and combine them. Often, the best solution is a Frankenstein of Panel 3 from Developer Dan and Panel 7 from Designer Diane.
